FAQs

Processing times

The processing of an application can take several weeks to months. Unfortunately, it is not possible to give an exact time frame.

Please note that it may not be possible to be admitted in the desired semester. The University therefore recommends submitting the application as early as possible together with all necessary documents. The University of Graz assumes no responsibility for the organisation of your studies, e.g. visa appointments, relocation planning, etc.

The verification of documents consists of several steps. It must be checked whether the formal requirements (e.g. legalisation) are met. The content requirements are then checked. Therefore, the review of the documents can take a long time.

The number of applications submitted in a semester also influences the processing time.

No. Applications are exclusively processed chronologically. When planning your studies (e.g. visa, accommodation, student residence, grants/scholarships), please bear in mind that it may take several months to process your application.

Apply for additional studies

Please send an email to studienabteilung@uni-graz.at within the admission deadlines

with the following details:

- Your full name

- Your matriculation number

- Name of the degree program you wish to start

- That you would like to start your studies in this semester

If applicable, send additional documents relevant to your studies (e.g. confirmation that you have passed the admission procedure for restricted programs) as a PDF file

An application is always required for a Master's degree programme. If you already have a student account, you can create the application via your UGO account uner “My Application” and upload the required documents there.

Please complete the preparatory course (VGUH) first in order to fulfill the existing admission requirements. Then send an email to the Academic Affairs Office with the admission letter you have, the VGUH certificates and that you would like to study another degree programme.

It is not possible to resubmit documents (application) while you are still enrolled in the preparatory course, and any such submissions must be canceled.

No. You have to first complete the preparatory course (VGUH) in order to fulfill the existing admission requirements. It is not possible to resubmit documents (application) while you are still enrolled in the preparatory course, and any such submissions must be canceled.

Only when you have completed the preparatory course you can send an email to the Admissions Office stating which other degree program you would like to study. Please attach your current admission letter and VGUH certificates to this email.

In accordance with Section 20 of the examination regulations for the preparatory course (VGUH), the university evaluates whether any additional exams are required beyond those that already qualify you to attend the course and take exams. If you do not have any new documents indicating that other supplementary examinations are required, a new application is not permitted, as you must first fulfil the supplementary examinations specified in your admission letter. Therefore, applications will be cancelled until you can prove that you meet the requirements under which you have been admitted.

Documents

No! Incomplete documents will result in your application being rejected. You will not be able to reapply for the same degree programme in the same semester.

In your own interest, do not apply until you have all documents, legalisations and the proof of language proficiency.

No, this is actually prohibited by law! When applying via an agency, the applicant is excluded from applying for two semesters.

No! There are legal notarisation requirements. If these are not fulfilled, the documents have no probative value. Therefore, documents cannot be processed without the necessary legalisation.

You can find information on the necessary legalisation here.

No. We can only check whether an admission is possible on the basis of scans of the original documents.

If the original documents are not in German or English, a translation must also be submitted. The translation can be in German or English. However, it does not replace the original document. Both documents (original plus translation) must be scanned and uploaded as one PDF document.

The translation must be done by a court-certified translator.

Translations from Austria and abroad are accepted.

No. We always need the originals together with the corresponding translations. Translations alone are not sufficient.

Please upload the scan of the original with the scan of the corresponding translation as one PDF file.

No! Applications are only possible after completion of the preliminary study programme.

In any case, proof must be provided that the degree programme has been fully completed. As a gesture of goodwill, the university may accept a provisional certificate up to one year after graduation.

If the degree programme was completed more than one year ago, a final diploma must be available. Under no circumstances will we accept provisional certificates if the degree programme was completed more than one year ago!

Only if the degree programme was completed less than one year ago. If the degree programme was completed more than one year ago, provisional certificates cannot be accepted.

The university generally grants admission based on the regulations of the University Act. The law states that admission is only possible if the foreign qualification is comparable to an Austrian school leaving certificate, but does not specifically refer to a grade point average.

The secondary school leaving certificate is not comparable if

  • the duration of schooling was less than 11 school years
  • the school leaving certificate does not entitle the holder to study at all higher education institutions in the country of education
  • more than 4 supplementary examinations are required to establish equivalence
  • individual grades in the final certificate are less than 50% of the maximum grade or a negative grade has been achieved
  • Only for countries with a state university entrance examination (e.g. Greece, Kazakhstan, Cyprus): less than 50% of the maximum grade or a negative grade has been achieved in the state exam

In all other cases, the university must review the documents individually and, if necessary, request recommendations from the Austrian Ministry. Therefore, unfortunately, there is no general answer to this question.

A review of whether admission is possible can therefore only be carried out on the basis of an application.

Application

The application together with all necessary documents must be submitted online using the application tool provided. Documents must be uploaded as a legible PDF document.

If you have never studied at the University of Graz before, you must first create a basic account in order to be able to upload an application.

No, the documents only need to be uploaded as a scan in the tool provided for this purpose.

Not all degree programmes can be activated in the application tool at the same time. Restricted degree programmes are only available once the result of the admission procedure has been determined.

Information on the admission procedure can be found here.

Information on the admission procedure for the teaching degree programme can be found here.

Please note the different submission deadlines for degree programmes with restricted admission.

You can only apply for a limited number of study programmes in the application tool.

Applications for a programme cannot be changed retrospectively. This means if you have reached the number of possible applications, a new application is only possible in the following semester.

Therefore, before submitting your application, please ensure that you have applied for the correct programme.

NOTE: If the submitted application shows that you meet all the admission requirements for a regular Bachelor's/Diploma programme, you can apply for further Bachelor's/Diploma programmes via email and be enrolled. It is not necessary to re-check the documents based on an application.

As each master's programme has different admission requirements (language certificates, content-related admission requirements according to the curriculum), an application must be submitted for each new/different master's programme.

Even if you are not yet taking part in the admission procedure, you can only apply once the admission procedure has been completed. It is not possible to upload an application before then.

Unfortunately not. You can only apply for a degree programme once per semester. A new application is only possible in the next semester.

Therefore, please make sure that you only apply once you have all documents.

You can find information on the documents for an application for a Bachelor's degree programme here.

Information on the documents required for an application for a Master's programme can be found here.

Information on the necessary language certificates can be found here.

Information on legalisation can be found here.

Unfortunately, this is not possible. Once you have submitted your application online, you can no longer edit it.

This means that you cannot change the study programme or the documents you have uploaded.

Therefore, BEFORE submitting your application, please ensure that

  • you have selected the correct degree programme in the application portal
  • the information you have entered is correct
  • you have uploaded the correct documents
  • the uploaded documents are legalized and translated, if necessary
  • you have uploaded a valid language certificate

Vorstudienlehrgang (VGUH)

No. You cannot apply for the preparatory course. You must submit an application for a regular degree programme. Only after receiving your application for a degree programme can the university check whether you are eligible to participate in the VGUH.

It is not possible to apply for the preparatory course! You must apply for a regular degree programme. Only on the basis of your application for a degree programme can it be determined whether you can and must participate in the VGUH.

No! The University Act stipulates that you may only take the German language exam at the preparatory course set up for this purpose. In Graz, this is the Vorstudienlehrgang (VGUH).

No. The university only requires that you pass the exam.

The course is an additional offer to help you prepare for the exam. It is your decision whether you want to attend the course or study for the exam on your own.

Please note, however, that you can only be enrolled as a non-degree-seeking student if you attend the course. This means that without registering for the course, you will not receive a study confirmation. Therefore, please check in advance with the individual institutions whether you need a study confirmation (e.g. for a visa, insurance, child benefit, student accommodation, etc.). Unfortunately, the university cannot provide any information on this matter.

No. Admission to the university is a requirement for attending the preparatory course.

An extension of the deadline is not possible. A legally binding decision cannot be changed.

Therefore, please use the time until your arrival to study independently so that you can pass the exams of the preparatory course within the specified period.

Studies that have been started but not completed cannot be taken into account for admission. This means that the examinations at the VGUH must be taken in accordance with the University Act in conjunction with the University of Graz's regulations on admission to studies.

No. The preparatory course is only for international students who already have a secondary school leaving certificate but do not yet have sufficient German language skills or whose secondary school leaving certificate is not equivalent to the Austrian one.

The university entrance qualification exam is for prospective students who do not yet have a Matura.

The preparatory course for university entrance qualification is therefore not the same as the preparatory course. You cannot apply for the preparatory course.

No. The university can only evaluate on the basis of the application whether and which examinations must be taken at the VGUH.

This evaluation is based on the University Act and the University of Graz Admission Regulations. Therefore, each school leaving certificate must be checked individually.

However, if the duration of schooling is only 11 years, 4 supplementary exams must be taken, including mathematics, a language, a natural science subject and a humanities subject.

No. The supplementary examinations provide a general university entrance qualification. The supplementary examinations are dependent on the school leaving certificate. They are not dependent on the study program you applied for.

There may be several reasons for this:

1. You have not yet paid the course fee to the VGUH.

2. The VGUH has not yet received the money.

3. The VGUH has not yet notified the university that they have received the course fee.

4. The VGUH's notification has not yet been processed by the university (this can take between 3-5 working days).

5. The university has not (yet) received the transfer (transfers can take 3-5 working days. Only transfers with the correct payment reference can be assigned to your account).

6. The amount/payment details were incorrect (please note: the payment reference changes EVERY semester. The ÖH contribution is also increased by the ÖH from time to time. Therefore, please ensure that you use the correct details from your student account).

Please therefore ensure that you:

- have paid the course fee to the VGUH. If necessary, contact the VGUH

- You have transferred the ÖH fees correctly. Please check the status in your student account. If the payment was made more than a week ago but has not yet been assigned to your account, please send a request including the payment confirmation to studienbeitrag(at)uni-graz.at

No. You can only attend the preparatory course if you meet the minimum requirements for admission to a degree programme. This includes the A2 German certificate.

This means that in order to be eligible to apply, you must have already obtained an A2 certificate independently. Only then can the university check whether admission is possible. Only if the admission is possible, you can participate in the VGUH.

Language(s)

In principle, language skills at C1 according to Gers are required to start the programme.

Some degree programmes have different (higher) language requirements.

No! No application is possible without a language certificate.

No! According to University Act, the language certificate must be submitted with the application. Without the certificate, the application will be rejected immediately. So in your  own interest, do not apply until you have the certificate!

A new application for the same semester and degree programme is not possible after a rejection.

No! Certificates that are older than 2 years cannot be considered.

No! We can only accept the language certificates listed here.

No. A German certificate is only required if your previous education was not in German.

Please note that it must be clear from the educational documents that the language of education was German. Otherwise, a language certificate is still required.

No! Citizenship is not sufficient proof of language skills. The Austrian Universities Act expressly requires proof of language proficiency in the form of German at Matura level or a generally recognised language certificate that is no more than two years old.

Accepted language certificates can be found here.

No! Living and/or working in Austria/Germany is not sufficient proof of language skills. The Austrian Universities Act expressly requires proof of language proficiency in the form of German at Matura level or a generally recognised language certificate that is no more than two years old.

The accepted language certificates can be found here.

The University of Graz currently only offers Bachelor's programmes in German.

If the language of education English is officially confirmed in the degree documents (Diploma Supplement), no further certificate is required. Otherwise, a language certificate must be submitted.

No. The points are a minimum number of points. Admission with fewer points is not possible.

No. The university does not offer language courses for applications. You must obtain the certificate required for the application on your own.

No. A confirmation is not an official, legal document. If the language of instruction is not confirmed in the official degree document (Diploma Supplement), one of the above-mentioned certificates must be submitted.

Application and Submission Deadlines

There are two semesters, summer and winter semester. Dates and deadlines can be found here.

The application period is only open for one semester at a time. This means that you can only apply for the semester that is currently open. It is not possible to apply for another, later semester. The semester is therefore already specified in the online application management system. If you would like to apply for a different semester, you must wait for the designated application period.

No, applications are only possible for the semester for which the submission deadline is currently running.

No, applications are only possible for the semester for which the application deadline is currently running.

No! The application portal is only open during the respective submission period. No application data can be uploaded outside of that period.

No exceptions to the submission period are possible.

Enrollment and admission letter

If you do not wish to enrol at this time, do not take any action at the moment. Only take the necessary steps for enrolment in the semester for which you wish to enrol. The enrolment cannot be taken back!

Please note that for programmes with a selection process (e.g. English taught Master's programme NAWI Graz), the study place confirmation is only valid for the respective academic year (winter and summer semester) for which you participated in the selection process. Enrolment is not possible after this period. You will have to participate in the admission procedure again.

As long as there are no changes to the admission requirements (e.g. changes to the curriculum), you can still enrol one or two semesters after receiving the admission letter.

In cases where changes to the curriculum are already known, the admission letter will explicitly state how long the admission letter is valid. Unfortunately, changes to the curriculum are not always known at the time the admission letter is issued.

The admission letter does not specify a fixed start date for the programme, so that you can still enrol one or two semesters later without having to submit a new application.

The condition for this is that the admission requirements (e.g. curriculum) have not changed since the letter was issued.

No, because it is a legally binding document. It can only be issued in German, as German is the official language in Austria and the decision would not be legally binding if it were issued in another language.

If you do not understand the language used in the admission letter, it is your responsibility to arrange for a translation into a language you understand.

If you have any questions about the admission conditions themselves, please contact the Academic Affairs Office. The contact details can be found in the admission letter. Please send the letter together with your enquiry to the email address provided so we have all information about your admission and can respond to your enquiry accordingly.

An admission letter is a legally binding document that cannot be changed. No new admission letter can be issued.

It cannot be adapted to the needs of applicants (e.g. for visa).

It can only be issued in German, as this is the official language in Austria and the admission letter would not be legally binding in any other language.

The only exception is if the university itself has made a mistake (e.g. a spelling mistake in the applicant's name). Only then can the decision be corrected by the authorities.

The Parteiengehör is an informational letter to inform you about the current status of your application.

Its purpose is to give applicants the opportunity to present further facts during the admission procedure, if necessary, before a final, legally binding decision is made.

You will find the "Application for enrolment" in your online application. You must sign this and send it to the Enrolment Office so that enrolment can take place.

The application is valid for the semester for which the enrolment period is currently running. You should therefore only send the application during the enrolment period for the semester in which you actually wish to enrol.

You register directly for the pre-study programme (VGUH) using the notification you received from the university. Once the VGUH has received your payment, it will send the university your master data sheet by email. Only then can the university enrol you. You will receive your payment information and matriculation number from us by email.

You do not have to come to the university! Communication takes place directly between the VGUH and the university.
